About This Item
Go deeper into your journey of discovering a non-legalistic, spiritual way of life that offers freedom from whatever is controlling you.
This workbook, a companion to John Ortberg’s transformational book, Steps, is intended to help you go deeper in practicing the 12 Steps as a program for life and Christian spiritual formation whether or not you struggle with an addiction in the traditional sense. The 12 Steps of AA are not only for people with known addictions; they are a framework for life change and spiritual growth. The truth is, we are all addicts. We are all overly attached to something, starting with our egos, that we are powerless to control.
The Steps Workbook is an invitation to deeper personal transformation, discipleship, and healing. Each of its chapters focuses on practicing one of the 12 Steps of addiction recovery, with a format that includes:
• brief opening thoughts and a prayer
• access to videos of John Ortberg walking you through each step
• discussion questions for either individual or small group reflection
• self-discovery activities to help you put the content into action
• relevant Scripture, closing thoughts, and journal space for reflection
Are you hungry for more? Whether you have an identified addiction or not, accept the challenge to embrace a different way of life, the freeing path that Jesus taught his followers and is the basis of truly transformational spiritual formation. Let the Steps Workbook show you how.

Video Session Summaries:
o Step 1: The Problem: I Can’t (25:02) — Step 1 begins with honesty, we admit we’re not in control and that life, on our own, isn’t working. It’s the moment we stop pretending we can fix everything and open ourselves to the reality that we need God.
o Step 2: The Solution: He Can (21:44) — Step 2 is where hope begins. We move from “I can’t” to “God can,” trusting that His power and presence are enough to meet us right where we are.
o Step 3: The Decision: I Think I’ll Let Him (20:44) — Step 3 is the step of surrender. We stop trying to run the show and instead choose to trust God with our lives, allowing faith to move from belief into action.
o Step 4: The Examination: A Fearless Inventory (17:40) — Step 4 invites us to take an honest look inward. With courage and grace, we begin to uncover the patterns, motives, and blind spots that shape our lives.
o Step 5: The Confession: Into the Light (19:45) — Step 5 brings what’s hidden into the light. As we share our story with a trusted person, we experience the freedom that comes from being fully known and still accepted.
o Step 6: Preparation: Becoming Entirely Ready (15:59) — Step 6 is about becoming truly ready for change. We move beyond “almost ready” and begin to honestly confront what’s holding us back from becoming who God is calling us to be.
o Step 7: The Petition: Humble Asking (18:30) — Step 7 is where we ask God to do what we cannot. In humility, we invite Him to transform us, trusting that real change comes from His power, not our effort.
o Step 8: The Damage: Named Those We’ve Harmed (19:54) — Step 8 shifts our focus outward. As God changes us, we begin to recognize the ways we’ve hurt others and prepare our hearts to make things right.
o Step 9: The Reparation: Made Amends (21:33) — Step 9 is the step of courage and repair. We take responsibility for our actions and seek to make amends, not to ease our guilt, but to restore what’s been broken.
o Step 10: The Repetition: Continual Inventory (20:31) — Step 10 becomes a daily rhythm. We continue to pay attention to our lives, quickly acknowledging when we’ve gone off course and returning to God with honesty.
o Step 11: The Connection: The With-God Life (20:13) — Step 11 invites us into a deeper relationship with God. Through prayer and reflection, we learn to live with a growing awareness of His presence in our everyday lives.
o Step 12: The Vocation: Helping Others (21:44) — Step 12 is about living it out. As we experience transformation, we begin to share that hope with others, carrying the message through the way we live and love.
o Step 13: The Unofficial Final Step (no video): Step 13 is the lifelong journey beyond the steps. It’s continuing to walk with God in surrender and trust, believing that the One who brought you this far will carry you all the way through.
